The Redbridge Book Awards. 7 July 2011
Thirteen students from the Trinity Reading Group who took part in this years Redbridge Book Awards were, Lorcan Canavan 7T, Eleanor Burdfield 7M, Marianne Kendall 7F, Chloe Lim 7P, Alice Morey 7F, Melanine Okoye 7M, Lucy Cavanagh 8M, Sarah Collins 8M, Selvana Suleman 8F,
Brendan Chung 9B, Catherine Chusney 9B, Morin Jebanesan 9M, Sandi Suleman 9P.
After arriving like drowned ducks, as one Audi decided it was fun to drive through the few feet wide of water along the curb on the Woodford High Road, on the wettest day of the term we had a great time!.
Whilst students had their lunch they had a chance to buy books from Newham Book Shop and have their programmes or books signed by the authors and take photographs.
Present at the awards were, the Mayor, Cathy Cassidy, Joe Layburn, Eleanor Updale, Karen David and Tim Collins. The authors talked about why they enjoyed writing books and about the book in the awards. Each author read an extract from their novel.
Students who submitted questions were given a chance to ask their questions and later have their photo taken with the authors.
This year’s winners were: for the Children’s book was Cathy Cassidy ‘Cherry Crush’ and the Teenage book was ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ by Malorie Blackman, both were popular winners amongst the students. Redbridge Library is hoping that Malorie Blackman will visit Ilford Central Library fairly soon and schools will be able to bring groups of students to meet her.
The result of the Short Story Competition was ‘Not the Monster’ by Scarlett Milner-Stopps from Wanstead High School and the Poetry was ‘Sparks’ by Aashik Chhibber from Ilford County High School. The competition was judge by David Fulton Lecturer in English at Brunel University and Joe Layburn author and teacher. The winners of the Teen Quiz was Beal High School and the Children’s Quiz was a joint win by Winston Way and Fairlop Primary School.
The students had a very enjoyable time listening to the authors, having a chance to ask questions and the opportunity to obtain signatures and photographs which, for the first time visitor, was one of the highlights of the afternoon.
The reading group are looking forward to reading next years books for the Redbridge Book Awards.

Stravaganza
City of masks - Mary Hoffman
I really enjoyed this book that I couldn’t stop reading it. Basic was the time for the Duchessa of Belleza to marry the sea again like every year but this time was different, Arianna was going to stay on the island and not return but this did not turn out well and was delayed by a boy called Lucian. As they take an adventure, secrets are unfolded and the truth is let out. Who actually married the sea? And who is the mother of Arianna? If someone likes a little romance and lots of adventure then this is the book for them. There was no bit were I thought it was boring. It was that good.
City of Stars - Mary Hoffman
This book was so good that every spare minute I was reading it. The plot is about that Georgia hasn’t got that fab life everyone does she isn’t interested in make - up or boys, she’s interested in horses but when she buys a small winged horse. An adventure is opened up to her and her life changes. Will she manage to talk to the guy that once died and is now in the same place as her? Will her step brother ever be nice to her? Like the first book it has little romance but lots of adventure in it. If you want a book to make you think and help you make up ideas about things then you should read all four books.
City of flowers - Mary Hoffman
How long left for his mum to get better? As Sky grows up his mum starts to get sick and he is in charge of the house. But his mum starts to get better but he still worries, however going to Talian is on his mind. But as the fight goes on will Alice still go out with him? Will she ever get over the fact that her best friend and boyfriend are in something she’s not? Well if you read this fantastic book you will find out. It was ok at the start but when you get in to the middle of it every thing starts to happen and you find your self so attached you don’t want to stop reading it. It is so good and interesting.
