Home Economics

The Home Economics Department is crucial in promoting the current advice on the importance of Healthy Eating and Healthy Lifestyles. As such, what we teach has a direct relevance to every student in the school regardless of ability or aspirations.

The department has four specialist teaching rooms, two on each site. There are three Food rooms and one Textiles room. The department is well equipped with up to date modern facilities. The Upper Site rooms were completely refurbished seven years ago.

All Year 7-9 students spend 10 weeks every year on Food and 10 weeks on Textiles. Boys and girls do both. At GCSE the department offers four subjects- Food Technology, Textiles Technology, Child Development and Health & Social Care. Food Technology and Child Development are very popular choices where coursework accounts for more than 50% of the final GCSE grade. Students are supported in the production of their coursework.

At ‘A’ Level we offer Product Design:Textiles and Health & Social Care. Health and Social Care is a very popular A Level choice and students who have studied this subject often go on to higher education studying nursing, midwifery and nursery nursing or Primary teaching.

Practical work is an essential part of the work done by the students and as a result the department is very busy and lessons are fast paced. The quality of the Textiles work produced at ‘A’ Level is exceptionally high and something of which we are very proud.

Students are successful in their achievements at all Key Stages where we gain above average results at Key Stage 3 and at GCSE. Students are taught in mixed ability groups and may include children with Special Educational Needs.

The Department has adapted to meet the needs of the many changes which have been introduced within this subject area but has maintained the philosophy that practical skills taught through Home Economics are skills needed for life and therefore these feature prominently in our teaching.
