English

Examination results are excellent and are well above national and local averages. In 2009 at KS3 the percentage of students at level 5 in English was 98.5%, level 6 was 89.0%, level 7 was 51%. This year, 89.2.% of Year 11 students achieved five A* - C passes at GCSE. In English Language, 88.8% of Year 11 students achieved an A* - C grade and  88.8% an A* - C grade in English Literature. (All Year 11 students are entered for both examinations.) At A-level, the pass rate was 100% for Literature and 100% for Combined. The vast majority of Sixth Form leavers go on to higher education.

The school operates on two sites which are separated by a short walk. Though students do travel between the two sites for some lessons, Years 7 to 9 are based on the Lower Site and Years 10, 11 and the Sixth Form are based on the Upper Site.

The school exists as a caring and purposeful community. Newly-qualified teachers are very well supported by the school and the local education authority.

English at Trinity is taught by a team of twelve teachers almost all of whom teach across the whole age range, up to and including A-level. There are strong links with Drama, Media, ICT, Special Needs and the Library and several members of the English Department contribute directly to work in these areas.

The English Department has a commitment to mixed-ability teaching and English is taught in mixed ability groups through years 7 to 11. At Key Stage 3, the English Department seeks to develop each student’s skills and competence in the major domains of the English curriculum: speaking, listening, reading and writing. We also strive to promote the lifelong enjoyment of language and literature through stimulating work and engagement with progressively challenging materials and activities. Students are encouraged to develop as informed and critical thinkers and are supported to become increasingly confident and independent learners.

These themes are developed at KS4 where all students follow the AQA GCSE courses in English and English Literature. The success and enjoyment students experience in English in Years 7 to 11 is reflected in the popularity of the subject at AS and A-level: currently, there are over 200 students studying English in the Sixth Form - either English Literature or English Language and Literature (all AQA).

The English Department is friendly and supportive and comprises a mixture of experienced and recently-qualified teachers.
